After a successful trial, Transport for London (UK) will move forward with plans to provide 4G mobile coverage throughout the Tube system in 2019.
TfL tested the technology in tunnels on the Waterloo and City line last summer. Four major mobile operators helped design the trial — Vodafone, O2, Three, and EE. Vodafone and O2 participated in the test, which took place outside customer hours.
“The success of this trial shows that we are on track to unlock one of the UK’s most high profile not-spots and deliver 4G mobile coverage throughout our tunnels and Tube stations,” said Graeme Craig, TfL director of commercial development, in a statement. “This is great news for our customers and will also help us generate vital commercial income to reinvest in modernising and improving transport in London.”
TfL will begin the procurement process in 2018 with a goal of connecting the first stations in 2019.
