Just in time for Cyber Monday, here are a few gift ideas for the transit geeks in your life.
No transit gift guide would be complete without Felix, the official cat for Huddersfield Station for the TransPennine Express. She — yes, she’s a girl cat with a boy’s name — has more than 100,000 Facebook followers and uses her fame to support local charities. This year, Felix is selling two calendars (Advent and conventional 2018 version), a plush toy, and a coloring book. Items are available here.
The Transit Gifts website provides one-stop shopping for items from major transit systems around the world. The collection is a little spotty and is heavily skewed toward New York City and Amtrak items. But if you’re looking for a Chicago Transit Authority shower curtain or a Moscow subway map lamp, this shop is for you.
The demise of the token has been a boon for jewelry makers. Bracelets and cuff links are especially popular, and the New York Transit Museum Store has a representative selection. Also worth a look are the subway-themed rain boots and an organic knit baby toy designed like a MetroCard.
The Société de transport de Montréal has a chic online boutique stocked with transit-related products made mostly in Canada. You can buy a mug designed to look like a transfer ticket (pictured here) or earrings made from recycled plastic.
Market Street Railway offers an assortment of San Francisco Muni streetcar-related items, including a light switch cover depicting the last PCC car built in North America.
And for the kids, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority has plush toys shaped like SEPTA railcars.
