Charlotte to develop mobile payment app

The Charlotte Area Transit System (NC) is developing a mobile payment application for the Lynx Blue Line. Light-rail passengers can purchase tickets at a vending machine, but CATS officials said customers often ride without paying because the ticket lines are too long.

“If there is a line to purchase a ticket and the train pulls up, most people will just get on,” CATS CEO John Lewis told the Metropolitan Transit Commission last month.  The fine for fare evasion is $50, but enforcement is inconsistent.

CATS is partnering with Passport to develop the app and hopes to begin testing this spring. Link to full story in The Charlotte Observer.
