Houston launches mobile ticketing app

The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (TX) launched a mobile ticketing application on Monday.

The METRO Q Mobile Ticketing app will allow Houston residents and visitors to purchase mobile tickets and day passes with a smart phone.  The app will also allow METRO officials to create customized tickets for special events like the upcoming Houston Rodeo.  Customers can pay for their tickets with a stored credit/debit card or PayPal.

“Today we take a significant leap forward for our passengers,” said METRO president and CEO Tom Lambert in a statement. “We are excited to get METRO Q Mobile Ticketing into the hands of our passengers, adding a new easy-to-use option to buy and use fares.”

“Here is a car-centric city with a reputation for people loving their cars, but in reality they’re recognizing the sprawl of Houston has caught up with them and they’ve got to have a better way to get around,” RideScout CEO and co-founder Joseph Kopser told CityLab. “Making it easier to use all the different modes, like mobile ticketing, is a big way forward in all that.”  RideScout owns GlobeSherpa, which created the app.
