Winnipeg Transit (MB) expects to introduce smart cards within a year. The new fare system, which is still nameless, will be implemented in two phases.
Phase one will introduce new fareboxes with state-of-the-art automatic coin counters, on-screen information displays, paper transfer printers and readers, and smart card sensors. Paper currency and pennies will no longer be accepted. In phase two, electronic fare media will replace paper payment options.
Cards will be available at transit offices and at selected drug stores and convenience stores. Customers will be able to add value to the cards online or by phone.
Winnipeg Transit expects to complete the transition to smart cards by the end of 2013. Link to full story in CBC News.
