A prototype for Transport for London’s (UK) newly designed double-decker bus arrived in London last week, and Mayor of London Boris Johnson was one of the first passengers. “Christmas has arrived early in the form of this revolutionary new bus whose gleaming coat of red paint and sinuous curves will brighten the day of all who see it humming along our great city’s streets,” Johnson said in a statement. Seven more buses will arrive early next year and will enter passenger service after testing. Responding to criticism that the custom-designed hybrids, which will replace articulated (or “bendy”) buses, were an expensive vanity project, Johnson said, “Do bendy bus lovers want a British bus that is cleaner, greener, or a German-made bus unsuitable for British streets?” Link to full story in The Guardian.
