King County sued over bus tracker

Two companies have sued King County Metro Transit (WA), saying that they own the patents to the agency’s bus-tracking and rider-alert¬†system. ArrivalStar S.A. of Luxembourg and Melvino Technologies Limited of the British Virgin Islands allege that Metro infringed on four US patents and are seeking royalties. “We understand they have sued dozens of parties over the last several years asserting similar patent infringement claims,” said Metro spokeswoman Rochelle Ogershok. “The cases have either been dismissed or mutually¬†resolved.” According to the Seattle-Post Intelligencer, the companies hold 34 US patents and five Canadian patents and are in the business of licensing the technology; other transit operators have called the companies “non-practicing entities” and referred to their litigation practices as “a shakedown.” Link to full story in Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
