London’s plans for underground mobile network hit roadblock

Transport for London (UK) has abandoned plans for an underground cellular network in time for the 2012 Olympics, citing project costs and technical complexity. According to The Guardian, TfL was working with several mobile operators on the project, and a Chinese network equipment supplier was expected to donate £50m of equipment “as a contribution from one Olympic nation to another.” TfL issued the following explanation: “The mayor and TfL made it clear that, given the financial pressures on TfL’s budgets, any solution would have to have been funded through mobile operators with no cost to fare or taxpayers. The parties were not able to agree a viable proposal, and the project is therefore not being progressed at this time.” A separate project to install a WiFi network is moving forward.
