Troubles for Charm City Circulator

Baltimore’s Charm City Circulator (MD) has had its share of troubles this summer. Mechanical problems, record heat, and traffic congestion have caused breakdowns and delays for the city’s free bus service. Of particular concern are problems with the electric hybrid engines that power the EcoSaver IV buses. The fuel nozzles were getting clogged, which shut down the engine turbines and forced the buses to run on back-up battery power. “It actually took us quite a while to figure out what the problem was,” said Joshua Anderson, director of research and development for DesignLine USA LLC, which manufactures the buses. “This is obviously an exciting product, it’s on the cutting edge, and it’s not going to be without issues.” DesignLine is working on a fix for the problem, which includes software to force more air through blocked nozzles and a new turbine design.
