The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has adopted a low-tech solution to a high-tech problem. The agency banned operators from carrying cell phones over a year ago, and 22 employees have been fired or disciplined since the rule went into effect. Most drivers observed during spot checks are adhering to the ban but, according to The Boston Globe, “a small but steady number” of tips on the agency’s hot line reported operators who are using their radios to communicate with dispatchers. To clear up any confusion, the MBTA is retrofitting all radio handsets with bright orange reflective tape bearing the agency’s logo. “The bottom line for me is for our customers; we want to make sure that they feel safe,” said general manager Richard Davey. “And in those instances where our employees are doing the right thing, we want customers to know that they are doing the right thing and to respect our employees.” Link to full story in The Boston Globe.
