Metro installs cameras on buses to improve safety

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (DC) is installing cameras on its buses to help document incidents and encourage safer driving habits. According to Metro, the DriveCam system captures video and audio records of unusual behavior — such as sudden braking or acceleration — with a goal of improving driver training and supporting accident investigations. “This is another tool that we will have to train our personnel to focus on safety,” said chief safety officer James Dougherty in a statement. In addition to improving overall safety, Metro expects the $3 million system to help reduce vehicle damage, workers compensation claims, and personal injury by preventing accidents.
