Growing pains for Clipper card

San Francisco (CA) Bay Area commuters are adopting the regional Clipper smart card at a rapid pace, and creating problems for officials in the process. “The problems we’re having are primarily growing pains,” said John Goodwin, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, which oversees the program. “I can candidly say that these are good problems to have but they are problems that we need to solve nonetheless.” As previously reported in The Transit Wire, problems have included a glitch with loading monthly benefits onto commuter cards at the beginning of the month, concerns about community outreach, and difficulties using the cards on San Francisco’s cable cars. But even as officials address these issues, new challenges are coming up, as the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency starts eliminating paper passes over the next few months. “We’re working extremely hard to reach everyone,” said Muni spokesman Paul Rose. “We know this is a big transition.” Link to full story in San Francisco Chronicle.
