Another look at Beijing’s straddling bus

by Susan on August 20, 2010

Now it’s official. While the story of the so-called Chinese straddling bus first hit the blogosphere about two weeks ago (see the Transit Wire post), The New York Times picked up the story this week. “I had the idea when I was doing research on the road for the designs of innovative parking slots for bikes and cars,” vehicle designer Youzhou Song told The Times. “I saw the traffic jams and wondered if it’s possible to make buses high up in the air as well.” A trial of the 20-foot wide passenger vehicle, which runs above traffic on tracks alongside the road, is planned for Beijing’s Mentougou district. “Mr. Song’s design is in line with our concept of green transportation and our vision of the future,” said  Wenbo Zhang, head of the district’s science and technology commission. “We hope to start the construction and operation as soon as possible.” Link to full story in The New York Times.
