Utah to test CNG buses

by Susan on August 19, 2010

The Utah Transit Authority will test two compressed natural gas buses to see if they can handle the region’s hills. The buses, borrowed from Phoenix (AZ) and Los Angeles (CA), will run for two weeks while the Utah Clean Cities Coalition and the U.S. Department of Energy will see how green they are. According to The Salt Lake Tribune, this is not the first time UTA has tried CNG buses:

Back in the mid-1990s, the Utah Transit Authority’s environment-friendly buses proved too gutless for the Wasatch Front’s inclines and altitude, and the agency charted a course toward cleaner diesel and diesel-electric hybrids instead.

With improvements to CNG technology, UTA is giving the buses another shot. “I just don’t see a downside,” said board chairman Greg Hughes. Link to full story in The Salt Lake Tribune.
