Social Bicycles will test its new approach to bike-sharing in New York City this fall. Registered users can use a smart phone app to locate a bicycle, unlock it, and ride off. The difference, according to SoBi founder Ryan Rzepecki, is that the bikes — not the docking stations — are equipped with the authorization, security, and GPS tracking systems. Customers can use the bike’s secure lock to attach it to any available bicycle rack, which eliminates the need for bike-sharing infrastructure. According to Rzepecki, the system can be deployed for less than $1,000 per bicycle, about one third the cost of other bike-sharing systems. Link to full story in Engadget.
