The City of Nashville (TN) launched a free bike-sharing program last week, with 30 bicycles available to residents at two locations. Nashville Bike Share was funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services and is part of the city’s efforts to encourage more residents to make healthier choices. “This bike share program touches several issues that are important to me -– the health of our citizens, our transportation system and the quality of our environment,” said Mayor Karl Dean in a press release. The stations will be solar-powered, and the GPS-equipped bicycles will track calories burned and calculate carbon offsets. The program is expected to expand to 100 bicycles at 10 locations next year.
