It’s not the medium; it’s the message. That’s part of the guidance the State of Florida issued in its updated record-keeping requirements. The new rules take into account the growing use of social media, text messaging, and other forms of electronic communications. “Records retention schedules apply to records regardless of their physical format,” the guidelines read, in part. “Retention periods are determined by the content, nature and purpose of records, and are set based on their legal, fiscal, administrative, and historical values, regardless of the format in which they reside or the method by which they are transmitted.” Link to full story in Federal Computer Week.
