MTA banks on $52 million in unused fares

Your loss is their gain. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NY) estimates that commuters will leave $52 million on the table next year from unused Metrocards, which means more revenue for the agency. As the New York Daily News says, “There’s a whole lot of money in those discarded and forgotten MetroCards.” To put that number in perspective, the paper estimates that the MTA could use the money to buy every resident of Staten Island a monthly pass at the new $99 rate.” Link to full story in New York Daily News.
