Only a few years ago, biofuels seemed to be the solution to breaking the world’s dependence on oil, and start-ups were trying to power vehicles with everything from algae to grass. Electric vehicles were dead. Now, writes the San Francisco Chronicle, the situation has changed: “The buzz surrounding electric transportation has never been louder, while the biofuel industry struggles to regain momentum after two brutal years.” Advocates for electric cars think the future is bright, but industry experts say there is still a role for alternative fuels. “There are three horses in this race – electric vehicles, biofuels and hydrogen,” Roland Hwang, transportation program director for the Natural Resources Defense Council, told the Chronicle. “At any given time, there’s going to be one that looks more promising.
