Paris plans electric car-sharing program

Following on its successful bicycle-sharing program, which has been a model for cities around the world, Paris plans to launch an electric car-sharing program next year. Under the Autolib program, the city would make 3,000 cars available in parking garages and on the street; about 1,000 charging stations will be installed. The program will be a public-private partnership with the city; four companies have shown interest in the program. One concern is vandalism, which has plagued Velib, the city’s bicycle-sharing program; about 8,000 of the program’s 20,000 bicycles disappeared. “Autolib is a really good idea. Both the bike and car rental schemes are great ideas,” one resident told NPR. “But they have to be kept in good shape. And this seems to be a real problem. I just don’t think Parisians are civilized enough.” Link to full story on NPR.
