NYC Transit considers second computerized train

by Susan on August 2, 2010

More than a year after New York City Transit introduced automated controls on the L train — the so-called robotrain — glitches are still causing delays. According to the New York Post, the problem is trying to introduce new technology into an aging system: “NYC Transit’s old infrastructure sometimes causes the new signals to short out and make the brakes seize up, resulting in delays from 15 minutes to nearly an hour, according to those who work the line.” Spokesman Charles Seaton told the Post that a component in the system has experienced a “higher than expected failure rate,” but that the automated system is working overall. The MTA plans to extend the autopilot technology to another line in 2015. Link to full story in New York Post.
