Octopus Holdings sold customer data

Hong Kong’s Octopus Holdings, Ltd., which provides e-payment services, received HK$44 million for selling personal data from 1.97 million customers to six companies. The company makes the popular Octopus card, used on Hong Kong’s MTR transit system. MTR owns 57.4% of Octopus, but MTR spokeswoman Diana Yue said yesterday that the two organizations operate independently. Octopus CEO Prudence Chan, who previously denied the privacy breach, has apologized and said the company will no longer sell private data.  Lawmakers are investigating the matter.
