The Government Accountability Office issued a report that summarized current use of Web 2.0 technologies by federal agencies and identified key challenges. As of July 2010, GAO determined, 22 of 24 major federal agencies had a presence on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube. Concerns fell into two broad categories:
- Privacy and security
- Records management and Freedom of Information challenges
While the report does not provide definitive solutions, it highlights the actions federal agencies have taken as they move toward developing social media policies. GAO director for information security issues Gregory C. Wilshusen presented the findings of the report before the House Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census, and National Archives.
