In Mass Transit‘s new Unwired column, Jim Baker writes about mobile broadband and its role in connecting passengers, fleets, and staff. After summarizing the state of the practice, he predicts that all major transit agencies will have broadband within a few years. He identifies three issues: (1) Transit operators want a third party to own and maintain the network, (2) There is no viable revenue stream from passenger WiFi, and (3) Advances in cell phone technology will open up new opportunities to introduce efficiencies throughout organizations.
