State Department and Pentagon issue social media guidance

July 18, 2010

The U.S. Departments of State and Defense are cautiously allowing their employees to have greater access to social networking sites. In newly released social media guidelines, the State Department wrote, “Social media provide an important means for the Department to fulfill its lead role in conduct of U.S. foreign policy.”  The policy goes on to warn employees to keep their personal and professional communications separate and reminds them to stay alert for “potential targeting of users for intelligence-gathering purposes.” Still, as CNET News writes, high-ranking officials in both departments are active social media users. State Department senior advisor Alec Ross has nearly 300,000 Twitter followers, while Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, also sends out timely tweets, but to considerably fewer followers.
