NJ TRANSIT will test quiet cars on some of its commuter rail trains starting on September 7. Passengers will be asked to refrain from using cell phones and to disable the sound on electronic devices. “Customers have asked us to offer a Quiet Commute option in an effort to balance the needs of people who want to stay connected while aboard our trains with those who want to relax or work in a quiet atmosphere,” said executive director James Weinstein. “We’re going to offer this amenity as a pilot program and rely on customer feedback to determine whether to make Quiet Commute a permanent NJ TRANSIT amenity.” NJ TRANSIT is not the first train operator to implement a quiet car program, but it is the largest. Passengers also have the option to tune out the world on trains in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and California. Link to press release from NJ TRANSIT.
