The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority will purchase 20 diesel-electric locomotives for its commuter rail fleet. Introducing cleaner locomotives will reduce emissions and save about $1.5 million a year in fuel costs. According to The Boston Globe, the purchase was delayed for years because of concerns about costs and Buy America provisions. The authority originally hoped to buy 38 locomotives; the delays meant that the MBTA could afford to order only 20. The MBTA will borrow funds for the $115 million procurement, but expects to receive federal support. An MBTA press release says the locomotives, to be built by Motive Power, will arrive in about three years. Link to full story in The Boston Globe.
