The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NY) is considering charging customers a dollar for getting a new MetroCard from a vending machine instead of adding value to an existing farecard. Besides raising revenue for the cash-strapped agency, the surcharge would help reduce costs for manufacturing and distributing cards, and cut down on waste. “When I see what it costs to produce MetroCards, it’s not efficient, and it makes me sick when I see them strewn across the floor at stations,” one source told the New York Post.
