“We’ve got to lock it down,” said CEO Beverly Scott about fare evasion on the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (GA). Not only does MARTA lose money from freeloaders, but riders who don’t tap their Breeze Cards when they leave a station are complicating the agency’s plans to implement distance-based fares. MARTA recently conducted video surveillance to document how customers avoid paying. Common practices include sneaking through the gate after it opens for an outgoing passenger and multiple passengers entering on a single fare tap.
