Can you hear me now?

With the same technology used to design concert halls, acoustic engineers are making sure that that New York City’s new Second Avenue subway will be a “garble-free” zone. Stations on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority‘s new line will incorporate fiberglass along the ceiling and rubber blocks under the tracks to absorb sound and reduce reverberation. The goal is what the New York Post calls “hush hour” — subway stations where commuters can hear (and understand) station announcements and talk with one another without shouting. Other features include motion-sensing escalators and electronic train arrival signs. While the future of cell phone coverage in the system is still undetermined, the MTA will install wiring for future use. Link to full story in New York Post.
