Boston Herald reporter Richard Weir joins The Transit Wire in wondering whether the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority‘s efforts to expand cell phone coverage throughout the subway system have contributed to an increase in smart phone thefts. Weir spoke with deputy transit police chief Joseph O’Connor:
O’Connor acknowledged the dilemma created by the added underground cell phone service: as more and more riders are able to talk on their phones while riding in subways, they are coincidentally making their pricey phones more visible to thieves and increasing the chance of getting them robbed.
So is there a connection? O’Connor isn’t sure. “I couldn’t make that jump,” he said. “We are looking at it to try and see what exactly is the cause.” Link to full story in the Boston Herald.
