Software glitch affects first day of Metro fare increase

Customers at 34 Metrorail stations caught a break yesterday, but not for long. A software glitch allowed riders using paper tickets to avoid paying Sunday’s fare increase, but all fare gates were fixed by early afternoon. The error did not affect customers using the SmarTrip contactless card.  “We anticipated that there might be glitches,” spokesman Reggie Woodruff said. “With all the programming we did for so many stations, it was bound to happen.” The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (DC)  raised rail fares by about 18% and bus fares by 20%.
