Maybe it was inevitable. As transit agencies expand cell phone coverage in their subway systems — and customers take advantage of the explosion of transit-friendly applications — thieves are targeting smart phones. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority reports a 17% increase in cell phone thefts this year, part of an increase in property crimes on the system. “The bulk of our robberies are what we would call snatch-and-grabs. And a lot them are from these iPhones that are being stolen,” said MBTA Transit Police chief Paul MacMillan.
