Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said that private developer PT Jakarta Monorail was to blame for delays in the city’s monorail project: “We are still waiting for their move. It’s not our project, it’s theirs, and we need to talk to them.” Jakarta Monorail abandoned the project in 2008 because of legal and funding issues. An investigation determined that the city owed the developer the equivalent of $20 million; the developer is seeking more. Apart from the finances, some question the value of the project. “Monorails were never conceived to be any kind of solution for public transportation needs, due to their very limited capacity,” said Danang Parikesit, secretary general of the nongovernmental Indonesian Transportation Society.
