Wiring MTA’s tunnels: “Bring in the interns”

June 22, 2010

Continuing its cost-cutting ways, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NY) hopes that a group of college interns can find a cheap way to provide cell phone coverage in the subway system. According to The New York Times, the MTA will consider a contract with City College of New York professor Umit Uyar, who would oversee seven students over 10 weeks. And if sorting out the cell phone issue isn’t enough, the students would also be asked to implement a wireless credit card payment system for the city’s buses. As The Times says, “Forget million-dollar consultants: Bring in the interns.” Link to full story in The New York Times.
