Taking the MBTA’s bus simulator for a spin

Boston Herald reporter Richard Weir writes about his experience testing the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority‘s $1.3 million bus cab simulator.

Driving a bus isn’t easy, even if it’s a mock-up of a 40-foot rig surrounded by video screens with ever-changing images, from ambulances running red lights to rowdy fares fighting in the aisle…Streets shrink quickly, intersections become obstacles and mirrors are your best friends.

“The highlight of the simulator is to put a driver in a high-risk situation in a low-risk environment,” said senior MBTA instructor Ed Tighe. Link to full story in the Boston Herald.
