The London Underground signed up 10 stations and its headquarters to the 10:10 campaign, which commits the agency to cutting carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. In addition to reducing power consumption by turning off unnecessary lights and switching off escalators during off-peak hours, the Underground will deploy regenerative braking to feed electric power back into the system. “Despite the Tube being one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel in London, more can still be done to help protect the environment,” said chief operating officer Howard Collins. “Signing up to 10:10 is just one of the ways in which London Underground is changing the way we operate, helping to make London a greener and more pleasant place to live.” Link to full story in the Guardian.
