Bay Area officials launch Clipper smart card

After months of planning, the transition from TransLink to Clipper card became official today. San Francisco (CA) Bay Area transportation officials launched the rebranded smart card, which was named to reflect the area’s maritime history. Customers can use the card at San Francisco Muni, Bay Area Rapid Transit, AC Transit, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit and Ferry, and the Dumbarton Express — which carry 80% of the region’s transit riders — with SamTrans and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority expected to come on board later this year. “No need for exact change. No hassles,” said Muni executive director and CEO Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr. “Customers simply load fare value or passes directly on the Clipper card— which can be accomplished automatically by taking advantage of the Autoload feature.”
