A New York Times reporter waxes poetic about the the MasterCard PayPass tap-and-go transit trial currently underway in New York and New Jersey. Ariel Kaminer writes: “The briefest kiss of plastic on plastic and then, just like that: open sesame!” But news about the project appears to be spreading slowly:
Stand at the PayPass turnstile in the Grand Central subway station and, I predict, your interest in technology and transportation will give out hours before you see anyone even try it. I did find a few people who said it sounded interesting, one who had even heard about the six-month trial. But none who had given it a shot.
Besides speeding boarding times, the RFID-enabled devices would eliminate the need for commuters to carry multiple fare media. The project covers MTA New York City Transit, NJ TRANSIT, and Port Authority Trans-Hudson trains that link New York and New Jersey. Link to full story in The New York Times.
