The Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation (VA) plans to put real-time information on its buses to allow customers to track vehicle location via cell phone or Internet. “Five minutes seems like a long time when you’re standing at a bus stop, and you start standing there and the bus doesn’t come, you tend to walk away,” said director of public transportation Reggie Smith. “Well, if you have real-time access and you can find out when that bus is going to be there, if it’s late or if it’s already been there or it will make you want to stay there and wait.” The department plans to issue a request for proposals soon.
