Social media helped organize DC streetcar fans

Social media played a key role in restoring streetcar funding to the Washington (DC) budget this week. After Greater Greater Washington reported that council chairman Vincent Gray tried to slash the project funding, other blogs quickly picked up the story. Twitter and Facebook also spread the word — Greater Greater Washington‘s initial post was shared, forwarded, and retweeted numerous times — and the resulting calls to action generated more than 1,000 calls to Gray’s office. As David Alpert writes, “New activists, like bloggers and readers of blogs, mobilized in the span of hours in a way that wouldn’t have been possible before.” Link to full story in Greater Greater Washington.
