Helping rural residents use Google Transit

In Half-Mile Circles, guest blogger Sue Crowe writes about a project that tested the use of Google Maps in a nine-county rural region in northern California. Plumas, Shasta (which led the project), Siskiyou, Tehama, and Trinity counties participated in the first phase of the study;  Google Maps was launched successfully for all except Plumas County.  “Northern California visitors are now able to plan trips across this portion of California using multiple transit providers with ease,” said a spokesperson for Trinity County. “This type of travel planning was once difficult, but is now simplified with Google Maps/Transit.” Crowe writes that several challenges still remain — prioritizing a low maximum walking distance to transit stops and incorporating a 48-hour window for available transit services — and the team is working with Google to resolve these issues. A second phase is now underway, with a goal of launching 11 counties in total on Google Maps/Transit. Link to full story in Half-Mile Circles.
