Coming soon: Apps for New York commuters

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NY) welcomed the developer community with open arms at a so-called unconference Wednesday night. The MTA released new datasets at the event, and encouraged developers to brainstorm about creative applications. In addition to the apps that rely on smart phones, the MTA wants developers to pursue device-independent apps, such as those that use text-messaging, so that all commuters can benefit. “I’ll tell you right now, I want every New Yorker to be able to look at their mobile device and know when the next train or bus in coming,” said MTA chairman and CEO Jay Walder, who received high marks from the online community for opening up the agency’s data.
