MetroCard as canvas

by Susan on May 6, 2010

Something about the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority‘s MetroCard inspires creative repurposing. As Andy Newman writes in The New York Times:

Malleable yet practically indestructible, it has been folded, spindled and mutilated by commuters, bored booth attendants and credentialed magicians alike to make purses and frogs, boomerangs and stars, crowns and eyeglass frames.

But is it art? Enter Single Fare, an exhibit in Brooklyn (NY), that will display small works of art created on MetroCards. Most of the artists seemed to ignore the transit origins of their miniature canvases, although some found a way to incorporate the magnetic strip into their work and one even loaded his card with five dollars before painting it.  Link to full story in The New York Times.
