Speaking at the ITS America annual meeting, US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood spoke about the role of vehicle-to-vehicle communication in improving safety. Commenting in his blog, LaHood writes that V2V systems are built on low-cost technology, like GPS and wireless communications, already available in many vehicles. By providing 360-degree situational awareness of other vehicles equipped with the same technology, he writes, DOT research indicates that “up to 76% of all crashes by unimpaired drivers could potentially be addressed by this technology.” In a related story, CNET News reports that IBM will partner with the Texas Transportation Institute to test the next generation of vehicle telematics and analytics tools.
