Manila’s iconic jeepneys, created from surplus US military jeeps after World War II, have become one of the major sources of pollution in the Philippines. So a coalition of non-government organizations, politicians, and business groups has launched a campaign to replace the vintage jeeps with new “e-jeepneys.” The emission-free electric vehicles can carry about 12 passengers. “Because the old jeepneys are all diesel fed and so inefficient, they produce a lot of pollution,” said Red Constantino, director of Manila’s Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities. “Our goal is to eventually replace all public utility vehicles with appropriate electric ones.” Link to full story in Inquirer Global Nation (via The City Fix).
