State and local governments concerned about social media liability

While the federal government has successfully renegotiated the terms of service agreement with Facebook and other social media sites, the path is not so clear-cut for state and local governments. According to Government Technology, the Colorado Attorney General’s Office has advised its state agencies not to set up new Facebook pages because of concerns about legal liability.  (Departments already are online could stay put.)  While the specifics of Colorado’s concerns have not been made public, experts agree that agencies should make sure they fully understand the fine print when they sign up with any social media application. “There’s a lot of uncertainty, but we’re looking to knock down the barriers to more broad use,” said Charles Robb, senior policy analyst for the National Association of State Chief Information Officers. “Use preceded solutions to these problems — in essence the horse is out of the barn.” Robb indicated that NASCIO is developing a white paper on the topic.
