Chicago rail safety goes high-tech

Thirty-two Chicago Transit Authority (IL) inspectors walk every foot of track in the system, using two time-honored tools: a six-foot carpenter’s rule and an experienced eye.  But, in addition to the manual inspection, CTA uses a high-tech track-strength vehicle, which can apply 3,000 pounds of pressure to test the stability of the rail.  “You learn from the testing whether the rails are going to move laterally,” said John Herndobler, manager of track and civil engineering.
