Yale uses customized email to encourage transit use

by Susan on March 29, 2010

Thanks to some student expertise, Yale University (CT) has developed a new tool to encourage transit use by campus commuters. Everyone who pays to park on campus — and lives within a quarter-mile of a bus stop or two miles from a train station — will receive a customized email outlining their transit options.  The message will identify the transit services within walking distance and note the number of other Yale employees living in the same ZIP code to encourage ride-sharing. The first phase of the approach emerged from a class project in the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. An F&ES graduate developed the scripts to generate customized commute options using GIS. Link to full story in Metro Magazine.
