Gautrain uses social media to generate buzz

South African transportation officials hosted a “tweetup” last week to generate interest in the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link, a high-speed rail line that will serve Johannesburg, Pretoria, and O.R. Tambo International Airport.  About 200 Twitter followers showed up for a continental breakfast, a test ride, and — of course — the opportunity to tweet about it. The results were impressive — fans posted blog entries, YouTube videos, and Flickr albums, while #tweetuponrails became a trending topic on Twicsy.  Gautrain planners have made extensive use of new media to build support for the train, including a Facebook page and websites for children and youth.
